The Shadow Proves The Sunshine
by Switchfoot

"Sunshine, won't you be my mother?
Sunshine, come and help me sing
My heart is darker than these oceans
My heart is frozen underneath

We Are

Crooked souls trying to stay up straight
Dry eyes in the pouring rain while
The shadow proves the sunshine
The shadow proves the sunshine
Two scared little runaways
Hold fast till the break of daylight when
The shadow proves the sunshine
The shadow proves the sunshine

Oh Lord, why did you forsake me?

Oh Lord, don't be far away (away)
Storm clouds gathering beside me
Please Lord, don't look the other way

I am a

Crooked soul trying to stay up straight
Dry eyes in the pouring rain where
The shadow proves the sunshine
The shadow proves the sunshine
Too scared little runaways
Hold fast till the break of daylight when
The shadow proves the sunshine
The shadow proves the sunshine

Yeah, yeah, shine on me

Yeah, yeah, shine on me
Yeah, yeah, shine on me
Yeah, yeah (shine on me)

We're

Crooked souls trying to stay up straight
Dry eyes in the pouring rain where
The shadow proves the sunshine
The shadow proves the sunshine
Too scared little runaways
Hold fast till the break of daylight when
The shadow proves the sunshine
The shadow proves the sunshine

Yeah, yeah

Shine on me
Yeah, yeah
Shine on me
Yeah, yeah
Shine on me
Shine on me
Let my shadows prove the sunshine"

The Shadow Proves The Sunshine has got to be my all time favorite Switchfoot song. Its one of their older songs in their album Nothing Is Sound; but one of their most meaningful and inspiring as well. I was touched by the particular emotional song.

What this song talks about is our shadows proving our sunshines; to me at least. When there's a shadow there must be a light, when there's bad there must be good. Our hard times, sufferings, and trials prove God's wonderful goodness, unfailing love, and everlasting mercy. Every time I face 'shadows', I will 'hold fast till the break of daylight where, the shadow proves the sunshine'. Every time there's a shadow it's a new opportunity to experience sunshine all over again.

I really love how this song embodies the idea that suffering and pain has a significance and worth; it helps us to appreciate and experience God's amazing love. This is my interpretation and how I relate it to my life.
